Any Great British Bake Off fan concerned about their beloved show’s fate when it transfers to C4, might take the channel’s treatment of Her as a warning. It’s the first ever mainstream showing of the best screenplay Oscar winner and best picture nominee from inventive writer/director Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich, Where the Wild Things Are), and it’s scheduled for the middle of the night. Please do record it, though, as this lightly fantastic fable, about a professional letter-writer (Joaquin Phoenix) in an antiseptic, Japanese-looking LA of the future who falls in love with a computer operating system, is quite delightful. Scarlett Johansson voices “Samantha”, the sentient personality of his device that complicates divorce from his wife (Rooney Mara). An innocent love story turns into a Terminator-style warning about the rise of the machines. It’s simultaneously sweet and creepily disturbing, and the score by Canadian band Arcade Fire is transcendent.
