Proof that Simon Pegg can rescue a film. Literally so, in the case of this romantic comedy directed by David Schwimmer, in that Pegg adapted an existing American screenplay for a British setting. He plays Dennis, an unfit loser who runs away from his wedding to pregnant fiancée Thandie Newton but then vows to win her back from new boyfriend Hank Azaria by competing in a London marathon. Pegg brings his usual blend of self-effacing physical and verbal mastery to the part, Azaria is full-on as his fit American nemesis and Dylan Moran heads a supporting cast of familiar Brit-com faces. You may, however, find some of the bonding family stuff distinctly American, and the blatant Nike product placement would raise even Jamie Oliver’s eyebrows.
