Way back in 2007, an ancient time before Game of Thrones, it seemed refreshing when Hollywood turned for action adventure inspiration to an Anglo-Saxon poem written sometime between the 8th and 11th centuries. An eye-popping motion-capture epic in the sure hands of director Robert Zemeckis, this relates the mythic saga of a Danish warrior drafted in by a besieged community to slay the monstrous dragon Grendel. Beowulf is voiced and digitally performed by Ray Winstone, whose physique is toned somewhat by the process (he looks more like GoT’s Sean Bean). Angelina Jolie, Crispin Glover, Anthony Hopkins, Brendan Gleeson and Robin Wright Penn are all similarly enhanced by pixel, giving an otherworldly effect. It’s captivating, powerful and violent stuff.
