Tales from the Crypt ★★★★
9.00-10.50pm Horror Channel
Freddie Francis, Oscar-winning cinematographer, later became a director specialising in horror movies. This, based on old comic books, is particularly gruesome and imaginative. Five tourists visit an ancient crypt and meet the Keeper (Ralph Richardson), who proceeds to tell them what fearsome fate may lie in store for them. Pretty creepy the tales are, too, involving a homicidal Santa Claus, the victimisation of a lonely old man and dreadful vengeance wrought by a bunch of blind people on their persecutor. Francis handles the action most effectively and there are good performances from the likes of Peter Cushing, Roy Dotrice, Joan Collins, Richard Greene and Patrick Magee, all familiar names back in 1972.
