There’s a key ingredient missing from this week’s episode of The Great British Bake Off 2016 – presenter Sue Perkins does not appear in episode two, leaving Mel Giedroyc to host the show on her own.
Tonight’s episode starts with Mel, wrapped up against the great British weather in a fluffy parka, standing alone on a bridge. “One baker’s gone; they’re not coming back,” she says. “Sue’s also gone, but she will be back.”
Sue does appear in the episode, but only in the pre-recorded ‘history bit’ and in voiceover to the various Biscuit Week baking challenges. Where has she gone?
Don’t worry, Bake Off 2016 isn’t toppling like a badly built ginger bread house. A show spokesperson confirmed that while she is missing from this week’s episode, Sue will be back in time for next week.
So, why isn’t Sue Perkins presenting Bake Off this week?
A spokesperson for Sue confirmed to RadioTimes.com that Sue had to miss filming of this week’s episode because of a family bereavement.
Bake Off co-host Mel Giedroyc is presenting the show on her own this week, but judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry are still in place
The show is filmed over two days in spring, usually at weekends. Mel and Sue’s voiceover is recorded after the episode has been filmed, with the historical interludes also filmed separately.
However, an image from next week’s episode confirms that Sue Perkins will return to present Bake Off in week three
This is the first time Sue has missed an episode of Bake Off since the series began in 2010. However, both Mel and Sue as well as a number of guest presenters have presented celebrity versions of the show on their own for Comic Relief and Sport Relief.
“Sue wasn’t able to join the team in the tent this week, but she’s back next week,” confirmed a show spokesperson, with a representative for Sue also confirming that her absence was due to a family bereavement.
