The Star Wars: Rogue One international trailer includes one crucial piece of new footage

Unseen dialogue hints at a previously unknown detail of the film's plot

A new international trailer is here for upcoming sci-fi spin-off Rogue One: A Star Wars story, and while the majority of the footage in it is stuff we’ve seen before (bar one or two brief exceptions), one new shot reveals some important details about the movie’s plot.

After a scene we’d seen last week in the US trailer where Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) is tasked with stealing the Death Star plans, new dialogue from fellow Rebel Cassian Andor reveals our heroes learned about the space station from an intercepted message.

“The message was sent by your father,” Diego Luna’s character tells Jyn, strongly implying a popular fan theory about the film – that her father Galen (played by Mads Mikkelsen) is the scientist actually behind the construction of the series’ iconic Death Star – and explaining why Jyn was recruited for the mission in the first place.

Mads Mikkelsen as Galen Erso

Mikkelsen himself has strongly hinted in the past about this connection, telling last month that “if people have watched the other films I’m sure they can add two and two,” and given all this we’d say the fan theory is becoming less and less theoretical.

With that said, we could be entirely wrong and Mikkelsen’s character could just work part-time in the Imperial mailroom. As long as we keep getting exciting new Star Wars footage, we’ll go along with anything.

Rogue One: A Star Wars story will be released on 16 December
