The first Hidden Figures trailer reveals the women powering the space race

Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe star as black women struggling for acceptance at NASA

Thought you knew everything about the early years of space travel? Think again – because as the first trailer for new film Hidden Figures shows, there are more heroes to remember than people like Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin or Yuri Gagarin.

Telling the true story of black mathematician Katherine Johnson and her colleagues Dorothy Vaughn and Mary Jackson (played by Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe respectively), the film focuses on how the three women overcame prejudice to help send US astronaut John Glenn on a complete orbit of the Earth.

It was the first time a US astronaut had done this, a big step towards the moon landing of seven years later and a scientific achievement that put Nasa and Glenn in the history books – but pioneers like Johnson, Vaughn and Jackson were largely left out of the story. Hopefully, this film can start to address that balance.

Hidden Figures will be released in January 2017
