Great British Bake Off finalist Dr Tamal Ray is stepping away from the cakes and back to his day job – medicine – for a new Channel 4 investigative pilot.

Be Your Own Doctor will see Ray working alongside Kate Quilton to help viewers “navigate a health-mad world where we are overloaded with information,” reflecting the reality that most people tend to go to Dr Google with their symptoms these days before going to their GP.

The pilot comes from Love Productions, the company behind Bake Off which Ray competed on in 2015, finishing as runner-up behind eventual winner Nadiya Hussain.

Channel 4 announced the pilot earlier today, and also revealed plans for new show Secrets of Our Favourite Foods, which will tell the stories of iconic dishes throughout the ages, and the recommission of Supershoppers and Tricks of the Restaurant Trade.

Commissioning Editor Dorothy Byrne says: “All four of these series concepts bring together the best of populist investigative journalism and features programmes which reflect people’s everyday lives.”
