Christopher Nolan releases gripping first Dunkirk trailer

The 'announcement' trailer makes up for in drama what it lacks in length

Director Christopher Nolan’s given us just 56 seconds of Dunkirk in his new ‘announcement’ trailer, but it’s 56 seconds put to good use as he shows us just how tense this Second World War film is going to be.

The ticking clock, the noise of enemies flying close and terrified soldiers waiting for rescue is quite the ‘thwack’ of action, even without a glimpse of the big names on the cast list. Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance and even One Direction’s Harry Styles are among the line-up.

The film charts the story of Operation Dynamo, the mission that centred on the retrieval of Allied soldiers from the beaches and harbour of Dunkirk, France, in 1940.

The announcement tells us only that the film is due in 2017, with filming said to still be ongoing.
