Scientists name newly discovered ants after Daenerys’s dragons from Game of Thrones

But don't worry, they can't breathe fire...

It seems Daenerys Targaryen’s dragons have fans in all kinds of places. Scientists have named two new species of especially scary-looking ants Drogon and Viserion, after two of Daenerys’ babies in Game of Thrones.

The ants, which were found in New Guinea, bear a distinct resemblance to the ferocious flyers. But don’t worry. This article isn’t about the rather terrifying discovery of fire-breathing insects.

These bugs, full names Pheidole viserion and Pheidole drogon, have large heads and spikes along their backs, features which reminded those studying them of the Game of Thrones characters.

Pheidole viserion is a yellow-coloured worker ant, while Pheidole drogon is dark in colour, like the corresponding dragons.

It’s all very cool. We just can’t help feeling a bit sorry for Rhaegal…
