Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan reunite as parents in first trailer for Ithaca

Ryan's making her directorial debut behind the camera with Hanks by her side, if only briefly

Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks are reunited on screen as parents in the first trailer for upcoming World War II film Ithaca.

His emotional cameo is oh so very brief, but it feels right to have the duo – who shared the screen so memorably in 1998’s You’ve Got Mail and 1993’s Sleepless In Seattle – side-by-side.

Behind the camera Ryan is making her directorial debut charting the life of 14-year-old Homer (Alex Neustaedter) who becomes a telegraph messenger in Ithaca after his brother (Jack Quaid) leaves for the war.

The film is based on William Saroyan’s 1943 novel The Human Comedy and Ryan said Hanks was “just so dear” during his short time on the film.

“He so did not have to do that,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “At the end of his time, he says to the crew, ‘All right, gather ‘round. Listen, I know we’ve gotten to know each other very well over the last 10 hours together, but I just want to thank you for being here for my friend Meg.’”

Ithaca is expected in September
