Star Trek’s first gay family glimpsed in new trailer

First look at the husband and daughter of John Cho’s Mr Sulu, whose new sexuality has caused problems with original series actor George Takei

After a fevered few days in which it was revealed that upcoming movie Star Trek Beyond would portray helmsman Hikaru Sulu (John Cho) as gay, leading to backlash from original series Sulu actor (and LGBT activist) George Takei, followed by backlash against the backlash from Simon Pegg and Zachary Quinto, we finally have a chance to see what all the fuss is about – because a new trailer for the sci-fi sequel has apparently revealed Sulu’s new family.

Seen in brief scenes fleeing danger, this man and daughter are believed by 1701news to be Sulu’s new husband and a new version of his daughter Demora, with the same actress seen in a picture on Sulu’s workstation in the below on-set video.

Notably, the man (who’s wearing a wedding ring) appears to be played by the film’s co-writer Doug Jung in a cameo role, so while it seems like we won’t be getting much more than a glimpse of Sulu’s home life, the film-makers have certainly tried to make it noticeable.

You can watch the new trailer below.
