Prepare to be intimidated into not littering on Wimbledon Common ever again – because actor Ray Winstone is lending his voice to what must be the toughest collection of Wombles ever seen, for the new CGI reboot.
“Bernard Cribbins is doing Great Uncle Bulgaria, and Ray Winstone is doing Tobermory,” series creator Mike Batt said, speaking at the Children’s Media Conference in Sheffield (via Guardian).
“People keep asking if it’s going to have that lovely parochial, cuddly quality that the Wombles are famous for,” he added, and given Winstone’s reputation for playing East End hard men, we can only wonder the same thing…
The original Tobermory
“We have to bring it into the modern century, but do we have to speed it up, do we have to cut every second? Yes, we have to make it palatable to the modern audience, but we can do it other ways,” said Batt.
Whether or not that means Tobermory regularly getting into rucks with litter bugs remains to be seen…
The new series of The Womble was originally intended to air on Channel 5 last year but it’s currently unknown where it will be shown, with an announcement expected in the coming months
