This Night Manager star could play the villain in Guardians of the Galaxy 2

But it might not be the person you’re thinking of…

It’s safe to say that Tom Hiddleston’s Loki has outclassed every baddie in a Marvel superhero movie to date, with the actor’s devilish performance winning plaudits from fans and viewers around the world.

However, Hiddleston could now be dethroned by one of his co-stars from BBC drama The Night Manager – none other than Elizabeth Debicki, who played Jeb in the stylish spy series and is reportedly now set to turn villain for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

According to several sources (including JoBlo and ComicBookMovie), Debicki is set to play a cosmic villain called Ayesha in the sci-fi-themed sequel, which will see Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord and his team face new challenges and search for Star-Lord’s father.

Ayesha (also known as Her or Kismet) has quite complicated origin in the comics that revolves around her being a cosmically-powered clone of a “perfect test-tube-grown-human” called Adam Warlock, and while Warlock had something of a cameo in the first Guardians film (his trademark regenerative cocoon can be seen in the background of The Collector’s residence), it seems likely that the character will end up with some sort of new background that requires a little less groundwork.

Notably, Debicki is actually already confirmed as a cast member in the film, adding some credence to the rumours, but as of yet her specific role has yet to be confirmed by Marvel studios.

Still, if it does turn out to be true it could be some much-needed good PR for Marvel, who came under fire last month after it was revealed that certain voices in the company turned down Iron Man 3 director Shane Black’s pitch for a female villain on the basis that it wouldn’t sell enough toys.

Maybe, finally, some progress is being made towards making the Marvel universe less of a boys’ club.
