Steve and Michelle’s marriage will be pushed to breaking point in the coming weeks after he finds out about her recent dalliance with Will.
Upcoming scenes will find Will’s partner Saskia reveal all about what went on while Steve was away in Spain. And the news goes down badly with Steve, who can’t comprehend that Michelle came close to sleeping with her first love.
So are Steve and Michelle over for good? “It’s all up in the air at the very least,” says actor Simon Gregson. “This is possibly the biggest test they have had and it comes during a really tough twelve months for them. So it will be interesting to see if they can work through it.”
And how does he think viewers will react if Steve refuses to forgive Michelle. “I think it’s going to be split. I think 80 or 90 per cent love the Steve and Michelle thing, but there are a few who don’t. So I think the majority won’t want them to split up.”
And it certainly looks like things are going to get a lot worse before there’s any sign of it getting better. Following the admission, Steve will be seen refusing to accept Michelle’s apology and coming to blows with Will in the cab office.
But is it true that, behind the scenes, Gregson wasn’t happy at the news that Steve was to have a rival for Michelle’s affections? “There’s always banter between yourself and your on-screen partner. But I wasn’t unhappy in real life.
“Leon Ockenden’s a nice fella and we had a good laugh – that thing in the cab office was really funny.”
And is the actor hopeful that the resolution of the story will see Steve and Michelle reunited? “Yes, because me and Kym Marsh have a really good friendship. We have a very good laugh – she’s hilarious. Then again as an actor it is good to shake things up sometimes…”
