Captain Kirk is “lost in the vastness of space” in new Star Trek Beyond trailer

As well a releasing new footage of the sci-fi film, director Justin Lin has announced the movie will premiere outdoors at San Diego Comic Con

Captain Kirk is having an existential crisis in Star Trek Beyond. He’s been desperately trying to live up to the memory of his father and now he’s struggling to work out who he really is.

“My dad joined Starfleet because he believed in it. I joined on a dare,” he says in this brand new trailer.

But Kirk’s philosophical musings are interrupted by some intense action. In the furthest reaches of space, The Enterprise is all but destroyed when it’s set upon by a new enemy. The crew abandon ship and find themselves fighting for their lives on a nearby planet…

This trailer was originally released at a fan event in Los Angeles, where director Justin Lin also announced that Star Trek Beyond will have its world premiere gala during Comic Con 2016.

“We’re partnering with Comic Con and are going to do our premiere in San Diego,” Lin reportedly told the crowd. “I believe its going to be the first time ever IMAX outdoors. We’ll have a full orchestra.”

Star Trek Beyond is due in cinemas on July 22nd 2016
