Talk about a rock and a hard place, Ewan McGregor’s university lecturer is stuck between the Russian Mafia and the MI6 in this adaptation of John le Carré’s spy novel. Good job he has Naomie Harris (the latest Miss Moneypenny) and Damian Lewis (the next Bond?) to help him out.
Tina Fey stars as the redoubtable American war reporter embedded in Afghanistan in this wry take on Kim Barker’s memorable memoir. Martin Freeman co-stars as a Scottish photographer (and her love interest) and ensures the mood is amusing rather than harrowing.
It may be based on a smartphone game but there’s plenty of fun to be had in this animated tale of a raging red bird who comes to the aid of his feathered brethren when their island paradise is invaded. Former Hollywood bad boy Sean Penn obviously had a laugh providing the voice for his character.
Boyhood director Richard Linklater harks back to the 1980s for this companion piece to Dazed and Confused, in which a bunch of college baseball players go on a weekend tear-up involving drink, drugs and women. Those nostalgic for a stonking 80s soundtrack and marvellous-looking moustaches should check it out.
