ANDREW COLLINS: FILM OF THE DAY
Miss Potter ★★★
In the 150th anniversary year of Beatrix Potter’s birth, this delightful film about the children’s author takes on new resonance. It’s cannily presented as a cautionary tale of turn-of-the-last-century class snobbery and the proto-feminist idea of marrying for love rather than security, with Renée Zellweger reviving her squirrelly Bridget Jones persona, only this time buttoned up in crinoline. Ewan McGregor is the bookseller who takes a punt on The Tale of Peter Rabbit, which brings her financial independence and makes her famous. He also falls in love with her, much to the chagrin of her snooty mum, who dismisses him as a tradesman. Kids will love the way Babe director Chris Noonan animates her animal creations, as if straight from the author’s imagination.
Hope and Glory ★★★★★

Colin Farrell fills the shoes of Arnold Schwarzenegger in this remake of the 1990 sci-fi classic about a man on the run from brainwashing baddies.
Spectre is up to its old tricks again in Sean Connery’s fourth outing as 007, ruining our agent hero’s spa-break by setting the countdown beginning on World War Three.
