He’s climbed Mount Everest, is the oldest man to trek to the Magnetic North Pole and has completed astronaut training – not to mention having fought alongside Flash Gordon on the planet Mongo – but booming-voiced actor Brian Blessed could soon embark on his most dangerous adventure yet…
At the age of 80 most people are happy just to be able to blow out the candles on their cake but when Blessed becomes an octogenarian he intends to make a perilous journey to the deepest place on earth, the Mariana Trench, which lies seven miles below the surface of the Pacific Ocean.
Only three explorers have previously travelled to the foot of the cavernous trench, which is 120 times larger than the Grand Canyon and more than a mile deeper than the height of Mount Everest.
The last manned expedition was undertaken by Hollywood director James Cameron in 2012, who was the first person to make the epic journey since 1960.
Blessed will plumb the depths in a cramped submersible sphere powered by electric motors, which will be subject to a staggering 16,000 pounds of pressure per square inch at pitch-black depths of around 35,000ft.
“I want to go to the bottom of the Marianas Trench in a bathysphere – all the way 37,000ft down!” Blessed told CALIBRE Quarterly magazine.
“You must understand, I do believe death exists, despite constantly defying it. But I live out on a limb.”
