Jack Dee has, rather fittingly, fired himself from BBC2’s The Apprentice spin-off The Apprentice: You’re Fired!
Dee hosted the series for just one year, taking over from Dara O Briain.
“It’s been a tough decision to leave You’re Fired,” Dee said. “I’d like to thank The Apprentice team, BBC2, the candidates and the ‘Big Man’ Lord Sugar himself for making me feel so welcome but now, in keeping with The Apprentice tradition, I am firing myself. Good luck with the next series.”
We can neither confirm nor deny whether he sat around an oversize boardroom table and pointed a finger at himself while humming the theme tune. But we like to think he did.
Work commitments are said to be behind the decision, with Alan Tyler, Acting Controller of BBC Entertainment Commissioning, admitting that they’re sorry to see him go.
“Jack is one of the most talented comedians in the UK and he very quickly made You’re Fired his own. We are really sorry to see him go but we are also delighted to be working with him on a number of other projects.”
Indeed, Dee is currently filming on BBC series Josh (written and starring Josh Widdicombe), he continues to host BBC Radio 4 show I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue and is also set to work on further specials of his BBC2 series Jack Dee’s Helpdesk.
A replacement for You’re Fired! has yet to be announced, although a popular choice is sure to be Dee’s regular guest and fellow comedian Romesh Ranganathan.
The Apprentice returns later this year.
