Sam Smith’s taking a break from Twitter after that Oscars row

The Bond singer is a bit shaken and stirred so he's taking a hiatus from social media

It’s been a bad awards season for some stars on Twitter – first Stephen Fry pulled the plug on his social media account after a Bafta backlash and now Sam Smith says he’s taking a bit of a break too.

The singer, who picked up an Oscar for Bond theme Writing’s on the Wall, inspired quite a reaction when he appeared to mistakenly assume he was the first openly gay man to win an Academy Award. When told that lyricist Howard Ashman was also an Oscar winner, Smith replied: “I should know him. We should date”, clearly unaware that Ashman had died of Aids in 1991.

Among others, Smith also overlooked screenwriter and director Dustin Lance Black – who won an Oscar for the screenplay for Milk in 2009 and is engaged to diver Tom Daley – prompting this response…

Smith has since taken to Twitter to explain himself.

And Ian McKellen even chimed in to clear things up.

But with so many people still talking about it, the singer thinks he’s better off going incognito.

Chin up Sam. When it comes to making mistakes you know you’re not the only one…
