Inside Llewyn Davis, Quantum of Solace, Fresh Dressed: films on TV today

The Coens get their folk on, James Bond is re-Bourne, and a history of hip hop through its gear 'n' garb: the RadioTimes team’s pick of free-to-air films on TV today

Inside Llewyn Davis ★★★★★
Premiere 9.00-11.05pm Film4

Music has always been key to the movies of the Coen brothers, usually to set a mood. In this affectionate if downbeat, Oscar-nominated portrait of the early-60s New York folk scene, it powers the story as well as the ambience. When Oscar Isaac’s eponymous struggling troubadour gets locked out of his apartment after chasing an escaped cat, his subsequent wandering becomes a metaphor for his stalled career. But music offers hope. Isaac is among a strong cast who play and sing their own songs, including Carey Mulligan and – less surprisingly – Justin Timberlake. Replete with the Coens’ trademark grotesques, this blues riff to lost opportunity is warmed through with the love of a good tune.
