Oscar host Chris Rock pulled no punches in his opening monologue for the 88th Academy Awards.
The comedian tackled the #OscarsSoWhite controversy head on, challenging both the lack of black actors nominated for Oscars and the actors who chose to boycott the ceremony.
Addressing the crowd of A-listers, Rock opened with the remark that the ceremony should be called the “White People’s Choice Awards,” adding, “If they nominated hosts, I wouldn’t even get this job!”
However, he also poked fun at the boycott of the ceremony by black actress Jada Pinkett Smith, saying that “Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties, I wasn’t invited.”
“Is Hollywood racist? You’re damn right Hollywood’s racist,” he summed up.
“But it isn’t the racist you’ve grown accustomed to. Hollywood is sorority racist. It’s like: ‘We like you, Rhonda, but you’re not a Kappa.’ That’s how Hollywood is.”
