It was the most celebrated divorce since Henry VIII and, in cementing EastEnders’ popularity, probably caused more misery over the years. Now the show has paid tribute to that famous showdown between Den and Angie.
In a cheeky nod back to tie into EastEnders’ 31st anniversary, Phil Mitchell presented his wife Sharon with divorce papers saying:
“This is Penny, Richie’s assistant, and this is a letter informing you that I’ve filed for divorce.”
This is an obvious reference to that fateful Christmas back in 1986 when Den pulled the same stunt, with the immortal line:
“This, my sweet, is a letter from my solicitor, telling you that your husband has filed a petition for divorce.”
Den and Angie are Sharon’s adoptive parents, making the scene even more heartwarming.
