Just a day after Kurt Russell was revealed as having joined sci-fi superhero sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 (probably as Star-Lord’s father), director James Gunn has confirmed another rumoured member of the team – Mantis, played by Canadian-born French actress Pom Klementieff.
The new Guardian will probably give Zoe Saldana’s Gamora a run for her money in the “green martial artist” department, given that – in the original comics at least – she shares both the character’s skin tone and fighting prowess (along with her own healing and telepathic abilities, and funky antennae). With that said, Dave Bautista’s Drax the Destroyer also has green skin in the comics but that was changed to avoid confusion with the Hulk, so Mantis could still be given a similar colour shift.
But it’s Mantis’s most unusual superpower that has potentially the greatest significance for the new film, because she has the ability to communicate with and manipulate plant life – which presumably includes Guardian of the Galaxy’s Vin Diesel-voiced tree man Groot.
Mantis and Groot in the comics
In fact, we’re betting it’s this ability that’s brought the relatively obscure character into the new movie as either an opponent or some sort of love interest for Groot. She could be the first person to really UNDERSTAND him, you know?
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 will be released on 5th May 2017
