When Paul Hollywood was asked what it was like to be back in the tent with the celebrities for this year’s The Great Sport Relief Bake Off, his first response was “horrendous”. But, with that ever-teasing smile, he was forced to admit that this year’s batch is actually pretty impressive.
“No, actually they were really good,” Hollywood said, speaking to RadioTimes.com on The National Television Awards red carpet before the show scooped this year’s Challenge Show gong. “It’s a good standard this year. David James was hilarious. Jason Manford was very good. I didn’t realise how much Geri Horner was into her baking. Geri did an amazing job.”
As for Samantha Cameron – who joins alongside Ed Balls, John Simpson, Alison Steadman and more – Hollywood said: “She was pretty good. She surprised me actually. Her flavours were a good combination.”
On whether the Prime Minister’s wife was intimidated by him, Hollywood laughed: “I think they all are to be honest. I think when Mary and I walk in they all get a bit scared. They all want to please Mary. With me they just get a bit nervous.
“It doesn’t matter who they are, if you put someone in front of me – whether it’s your next door neighbour or Sam Cam, it’s the same thing,” he added.
“They’re wonderful,” added Berry. “Wait and see, lots of surprises.”
The Great Sport Relief Bake Off begins Wednesday 27th January at 8:30pm on BBC1
