Celebrity Big Brother aired footage of Angie Bowie reacting to news of David Bowie’s death last night.
Bowie passed away yesterday following an 18-month secret battle with cancer. While the rest of the world reacted with shock, his first wife was none the wiser after entering the CBB house last week.
Producers told Angie the sad news off camera “at the earliest opportunity”, before showing footage of her reaction on an episode of the show last night.
“I haven’t seen him in so many years I can’t make a big drama about it,” she said, “But I feel an era has ended with his passing.
“I’m so very sad,” she added. “Stardust has gone.”
The clip saw Angie break down in tears before being comforted by fellow housemates John Partridge and David Gest.
The clip aired on Monday night as part of a preview for tonight’s show; some viewers took to Twitter after the episode angry at Channel 5’s decision to broadcast the footage.
The broadcaster explained that the star was told the news off camera, before choosing to discuss it in the Big Brother Diary Room.
Angie had previously been given the option to leave the show, but decided to remain in the CBB house.
“Following the very sad news of David Bowie’s death, we can now confirm that Angie Bowie has been informed off camera by her representatives. She has taken the decision to continue in the programme,” said a spokesperson for CBB.
“The decision to remain in the house is entirely her choice, and she has been given the option to leave at any time if she changes her mind. Appropriate support will be available to Angie at any time if needed.”
Angie was married to David Bowie between 1970 and 1980. The couple had one child, film director Duncan Jones, who confirmed news of his father’s death on social media yesterday.
