The Rum Diary, A Simple Plan, Ladyhawke, American Pie 2, Scanners : films on TV today

Johnny Depp bottles it, greed is good for Billy Bob, Michelle shapes up, and David Cronenberg blows your mind: the RadioTimes team’s pick of free-to-air films on TV today

The Rum Diary ★★★
12.55-3.20am Film Four

The Rum Diary is about a writer, a reluctant journalist played by Johnny Depp, whose dependency is for alcohol. Churning out horoscopes for a near-defunct newspaper in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Depp gets embroiled in dodgy land deals, voodoo and cock-fighting. It’s a passion project developed for over ten years by Depp from one of Hunter S Thompson’s early novels (written in 1961 but only published in 1998) and is directed by Withnail & I genius Bruce Robinson. The fine cast also includes Richard Jenkins and a super-seedy Michael Rispoli.

A Simple Plan ★★★★
11.40pm-1.40am BBC1

Three men discover $4 million in a crashed plane in the snowy wilds. Everything should be okay as long as they keep to their story. Like that’s going to happen!

Ladyhawke ★★★★
6.35-9.00pm Movie Mix

Cracking medieval fantasy adventure in which a young pickpocket (Matthew Broderick) becomes involved with some shape-shifting humans. Also stars Michelle Pfeiffer and Rutger Hauer.

American Pie 2 ★★★
10.00pm-12.10am ITV2

More rampant hormones courtesy of Jason Biggs and co. Subtle it ain’t, but you’ll have a hard time not giggling.

Scanners ★★★★
10.50pm-12.55am Horror Channel

Nasties taking over people’s minds isn’t a new idea, but in the hands of horror maestro David Cronenberg it makes for a visceral ride.
