Leonardo DicCaprio admits he turned down the role of Anakin Skywalker

The star of The Revenant also said no to a couple of superhero roles...

He’s one of Hollywood’s hottest properties but did you know that Leonardo DiCaprio was very nearly in Star Wars?

The star of The Revenant – who had been rumoured to be on George Lucas’ shortlist for a young Darth Vader way back when – told ShortList that he did indeed have a meeting with the man behind the galaxy far, far away about playing Anakin Skywalker, the man who would become Vader.

“I did have a meeting with George Lucas about that as well, yes” said DiCaprio, shortly after discussing the fact that he’d also been in the running for the role of Robin in Batman and Robin.

“I don’t think I was ready for anything like that,” he said of the caped crusader sidekick role, echoing those sentiments when it came to talking Star Wars and Anakin – who was ultimately brought to the big screen by Jake Lloyd and Hayden Christensen.

“Again, just didn’t feel ready to take that dive. At that point,” DiCaprio explained.

And what about Spider-Man, then? (Yup, he was in the running for that too): “That was another one of those situations, similar to Robin, where I didn’t feel ready to put on that suit yet. They got in touch with me.”

Will he EVER play a superhero then? “You never know,” he teased. “You never know. They’re getting better and better as far as complex characters in these movies. I haven’t yet. But no, I don’t rule out anything.”

Pity he turned down the chance to play a Jedi though, eh? Those mind tricks could have worked wonders on The Academy, and finally bagged him that elusive Oscar…
