Star Wars: The Force Awakens becomes fastest film to take $1 billion worldwide

JJ Abrams' film continues to break box office records

Another day, another box office record broken by The Force Awakens. The Star Wars film has taken $1 billion (£670 million) worldwide in a mere 12 days – that’s one day faster than the previous record holder Jurassic World achieved back in June.

It’s also worth keeping in mind that Jurassic World’s stats were given a significant boost by the Chinese market where the film saw record takings. The Force Awakens hasn’t even opened in China yet where it’s all but certain to top the box office, adding further fuel to its global domination.

Star Wars also enjoyed the biggest US Christmas Day box office takings of all time, raking in $49.3m (£33.2m) to add to its growing total. Its US takings currently stand at a lofty $544.6m (£367m) – a figure that has left its rivals Daddy’s Home, Joy and Sisters battling it out for second place over the festive period.

We call that an extra big Christmas present for the chuffed folk at Disney.
