The Ten-nant days of Christmas

The ultimate guide to the best David Tennant-starring programming over the festive season

We know what you’re thinking.  Yes, it’s great to have a bit of time off over Christmas to spend with family and friends, sharing the love that binds you all together – but how soon can you blow them all off to watch David Tennant do something on the telly?

Now your fevered prayers have been answered, because here at we’ve picked over the schedules to find the very best  of Tennant TV this festive season. And you said we never get you anything nice.

Doctor Who

If you’re hankering for the days when the Tenth Doctor was at the helm of the Tardis, you’d be best to turn your attention to digital channel Watch over the festive period. From tomorrow, they have roughly an episode a day on air (including the appropriately festive The Runaway Bride), so there’s plenty of chances to catch up with Tennant’s days as the Time Lord.

You can see a full list of the Watch episodes he appears in here – though if you want a more varied selection, Tennant’s Doctor Who tenure can be found in its entirety on Netflix, Amazon Prime and BBC Store.

Doctor Who: The Runaway Bride is on Watch tomorrow (Sunday 20th December) at 10.50pm

Tennant’s grouchy detective Alec Hardy will be back for a third series of this small-town mystery drama, so it’s the perfect time to catch up with series 2 of the ITV series.

From Monday 21st December, 10.50pm, ITV Encore

Nativity 2: Danger in the Manger

If you prefer your David Tennant in a festive flavor, this British film sequel (which sees him play a hapless teacher trying to win a choir competition) might be for you. Also starring Jessica Hynes, Marc Wootton, Jason Watkins and Joanna Page, it’s a good slice of family fun.

Monday 21st December, 6.15pm, BBC Two

How to Train Your Dragon

The actor has a small but crucial voice role in this acclaimed animated movie, where he plays Viking warrior and second-in-command Spitelout. Who said you couldn’t get your David Tennant fix on Christmas Day?

Christmas Day, 8.45pm, BBC Three

And to fill those other gaps…

You could of course always turn to the world of Video-On-Demand. Tennant’s latest major role as the mind-controlling Kilgrave in Marvel’s Jessica Jones is still available for streaming on Netflix alongside older parts in TV and film, including movies like What We Did On Our Holiday, The Pirates!, Fright Night, The Decoy Bride and Postman Pat the Movie as well as TV shows like Spies of Warsaw, Extras and (of course) Doctor Who.

Over on Amazon Prime you can add to the list thrilling BBC drama The Escape Artist, and if you head to the BBC store you can find a prime selection of Tennant’s other performances (including but not limited to Hamlet, Blackpool, Single Father, The Politician’s Husband and W1A).

So there you have it – no reason to tear your eyes away from David Tennant for a single second this Yuletide season. As if you would anyway.
