It’s finally happened. Sheldon Cooper is a virgin no more. The man who was once repulsed by the very notion of human contact has done the deed with his on-off girlfriend Amy Farrah Fowler.
Fans of The Big Bang Theory will know that relations between the pair have been rocky of late, with Amy breaking up with Sheldon during the finale of the previous series. After they were finally reunited, yesterday’s episode airing in the US marked Amy’s birthday – and the opening night of Star Wars: The Force Awakens (we might have mentioned that a few times over the past few days).
Torn between his two true loves, Sheldon chose to ditch Leonard, Howard, Raj and a first viewing of Star Wars and instead give Amy the ultimate birthday gift: sex (spurred on by some friendly advice from the ghost of Professor Proton in a Jedi costume).
While the Big Bang itself takes place off camera (watching Sheldon have sex would just be too weird), viewers got to see the before and after – and a promise from Sheldon that coitus will now be an annual event on Amy’s birthday. He actually rather enjoyed it.
Speaking to Variety, the team behind The Big Bang Theory – co-creator Chuck Lorre and showrunner Steve Molaro – defended the decision to have Sheldon get to the point where he was ready to do the deed. “I don’t think we ever tapped into Sheldon being asexual enough that we ever thought it would be a sellout when we got to his point,” said Molaro.
“It was something we talked about early on, but once he met and started dating Amy – which has now been 5 1/2 years – it just sort of evolved naturally. So it wasn’t a real concern of ours.”
Now the pair have passed another milestone, could we see the next Big Bang wedding (after all, Sheldon was carrying a ring in his pocket at one point) and a new generation of Big Bang offspring? “Not at the moment,” said Molaro. “Babies have a tendency to alter the DNA of a show a little more than we’re looking to at this time. There are other avenues we want to explore before we get to the pitter-patter of little nerd feet.”
The Big Bang Theory is on in the UK on Thursdays at 8:30pm on E4. Series 9 episode 11 will air in the new year
