Strange suitcases and missing magical creatures in first Fantastic Beasts teaser trailer

Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterson and Colin Farrell appear in first footage from Harry Potter spin-off movie Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them

With less than a year until JK Rowling’s Harry Potter spin-off hits cinemas, it’s fair to say we are more than a little excited.

So far we’ve had a few pictures of the film’s stars, spied Rowling herself pottering about on set and heard from those in the know what we can expect from the upcoming film. (“It’s like the fourth. It has the romantic comedy, that fish-out-of-water humour, that very human, natural character comedy,” producer David Heyman said.)

But now? Well, now we’ve seen some actual footage.

The first teaser trailer sees Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) arrive in New York with a magical suitcase. That magical suitcase is opened, creatures escape and then all sorts of trouble ensues…

Fantastic Beasts is “neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series.” The film, which is JK Rowling’s screenwriting debut, is based on a Hogwarts textbook of the same name.

The drama begins in 1926 as Newt Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. “Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident…were it not for a No-Maj named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds,” reads the movie’s synopsis.

Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them will be in cinemas 18th November 2016
