ANDREW COLLINS: FILM OF THE DAY
PREMIERE The Blind Side ★★★★
Sandra Bullock looked genuinely shocked when her name was read out at the 2010 Oscars. Perhaps she thought best actress belonged to Gabourey Sidibe for Precious, but no, thanks to this more uplifting tale of black poverty. Based on a true story, Tennessee runaway the aptly-nicknamed “Big Mike” Oher (played with dignity by Quinton Aaron) is taken under Bullock’s wing and blossoms as a college football player. (Oher now plays for the Carolina Panthers, sports fans.) Efficiently directed by John Lee Hancock (Saving Mr Banks), it’s a garden-variety triumph-over-tragedy tale that will play perfectly on TV. Bullock plucks the heartstrings as the big-hearted legal guardian of a kid who was sleeping rough. “Never had one before,” he grunts. “A room to yourself?” she asks. “A bed,” he replies. I’m welling up right now.
Toy Story 2 ★★★★★
Woody the cowboy and Buzz Lightyear think out of the toy box in a CGI adventure that’s even more inventive and exciting than the first film.
Robin Williams sparked a trend for wisecracking cartoon characters with his outlandish turn as the Genie in a modern Disney classic.
Enemy of the State ★★★★
The Fugitive meets The Conversation in an exciting action adventure that sees Will Smith pursued by Jon Voight and his posse of electronic tricksters.
Easy Money II ★★★★
