Boyband stars traditionally do well on I’m A Celeb – just ask King Kian, King Matt or King Dougie – so it’s little wonder that George ‘from Union J’ Shelley has quickly become a firm favourite in the I’m A Celeb camp.
In fact, with his popularity soaring, it’s safe to say #GeorgeOfTheJungle is beginning to look a tad like The Man Who Could Be King.
What a long way from fourth place in X Factor 2012 this boy has come….
Not content with winning meals and keeping the younger jungle lads and ladies on their toes (TOWIE’s Ferne McCann doesn’t fancy George at all at all and his Snake Rock campmates weren’t practically gagging to get him on their team), George went one step further and actually gained the approval of Lady C.
“We need people like George to flourish so that all of society can benefit from their existence,” the jungle’s very own aristocrat mused after Brian and Jorgie begged her to send him to Snake Rock.
To paraphrase his former mentor Louis Walsh, we think George could be “the next big King of The Jungle”, but the battle is far from over and he’s got some stiff competition.
Take former Geordie Shore lass Vicky Pattison for example. With her quick wit and killer one-liners (“Beyoncé is foamin'” is up there with the best of them), the reality TV veteran’s star is soaring on Twitter.
And she handled an accidental dunking in the live trial like an absolute pro.
Vicky was facing off against jungle favourite Jorgie Porter in ‘Cocktails and Screams’ when she managed to down her drink – if you could call a Schlong Island Iced Tea made from blended camel penis a drink – first.
But live TV is live TV and of course, things will go wrong.
Jorgie, who should have been dunked in a tank filled with foul smelling liquid, found herself sitting pretty and perfectly dry while Vicky made a splash that surprised even Ant and Dec. Talk about putting the dunk firmly back into PJ and Duncan.
Pattison didn’t kick up a fuss and Camp Croc claimed victory after downing blended beach worms (Sex on The Beach Worms) pig brains (Cham-brain) and tarantulas (Bloody Hairy). And while they looked forward to a jungle banquet, the Trailer of Torment was on Ant and Dec’s cards for Snake Rock.
As Brian, Jorgie, Yvette and Susannah grimly faced their fate, #GeorgeofTheJungle resolved to make the best of a bad situation, not allowing their misfortunate to dampen his spirits.
If there was one thing that cast a bit of a shadow over the night’s proceedings, though, it was the departure of Made in Chelsea’s Spencer Matthews, whose absence became something of an elephant in the camp – and online.
At the top of the show Ant and Dec announced that he had left, wouldn’t be coming back to camp, “and there’s nothing more we can say about that.” The pair stayed true to their word – Matthews didn’t appear in the 90 minute broadcast at all, and the remaining celebrities didn’t mention him once.
Matthews’ premature departure, which RadioTimes.com understands was down to medical issues, left many of his new fans disappointed.
But, as they say in the business, the show must go on…
I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! continues on ITV on Saturday night at 9:00pm
