Shock on The Apprentice as Elle is fired before final boardroom

Lord Sugar told Elle there was “no point” carrying on, suffering a similar early exit to last year’s candidate Robert Goodwin

Lord Sugar threw a curveball at The Apprentice candidates tonight, firing Elle Stevenson before the final boardroom had even taken place.

As losing Project Manager – team Versatile coming in more than £500 worse off than rivals Connexus after tonight’s handyman-themed task – Elle would usually get the chance to bring two people into the boardroom. After thrashing out the failures of the task, Lord Sugar would then opt to send at least one candidate packing.

But tonight he wasn’t mucking around.

“Mistake on that, mistake on this, six times the loser…you know, not looking great,” Lord Sugar told Elle. “In fact, there’s no point carrying on Elle. In your day job you organise the construction of basements, well in this particular task, you’ve dug yourself a very, very big hole…you’re fired.”

“Lord Sugar definitely made the right decision, he’d look like a bloody idiot if he didn’t,” Elle admitted as sub-team leader Mergim was made PM and had to decide who he’d be bringing back into the boardroom.

While the candidates were sure to be shocked, it’s not the first time Lord Sugar has opted to dismiss a candidate so quickly.

Last year, candidate Robert Goodwin suffered a similar fate as early as the second episode. Concerned there’d be a whole load of “finger pointing” after he chose not to take on the PM role for that year’s wearable technology task, Sugar cut through the mess.

“It would be an easy way out for everybody to be saying Robert this and Robert that.  So I’m going to make that much easier for everyone – Robert, I don’t like people who bottle out. So Robert – you’re fired.”

The Apprentice continues Wednesday at 9:00pm on BBC1
