Matthew McConaughey to play cute singing koala

Here's hoping for a few True Detective-style monologues in new animated film Sing

Following on from Johnny Depp as a crime-solving gnome and Anne Hathaway as a woman telepathically linked to off-brand Godzilla, today’s bizarre casting story comes courtesy of new animated movie Sing, which has signed Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey to play… a singing koala.

According to The Hollywood Reporter the film follows the trials of McConaughey’s character Buster, a struggling theatre owner (and, you know, koala) who stages the world’s greatest singing competition for all his musical animal pals including Scarlett Johansson’s porcupine, Reese Witherspoon’s pig and Seth MacFarlane’s mouse.

Apparently the film will showcase over 85 songs from the 1940s to the present day, but quite frankly we’re much more excited about McConaughey’s cuddly performance as Buster. If he can only translate some of the nihilisitc intensity from his fan-favourite True Detective character Rust Cohle into koala form, he’ll be laughing – and so to help him we’ve mocked up a few pictures of what that might look like. Alright alright alright?

Sing will be released on December 21st, 2016
