Johnny Depp to play Sherlock Gnomes in new movie animation

Elementary, my dear lawn ornament

Forget the Sherlock Christmas special, because there’s a new offbeat take on the Baker Street sleuth with an even starrier leading man in the pipeline. And he’s gonna be spending a lot of time pretending to fish in your garden.

That’s right – this is the news that Johnny Depp has signed on for the title role in Sherlock Gnomes, the follow-up to the animated Shakespeare interpretation Gnomeo and Juliet that starred James McAvoy and Emily Blunt (who are returning for the sequel).

Apparently the Pirates of the Caribbean star will enter the fray when a slew of gnomes go missing, with Gnomeo and Juliet calling the legendary detective into action to solve the mystery of their disappearance. Will he have a pointy red deerstalker? A porcelain magnifying glass? The suspense is killing us.

Frankly, we can’t wait to see what other Sherlock riffs the film will throw up (John Watson as a faux-greek garden statue? Moriarty as one of those plastic flamingo things?), but we do know one thing for sure – this movie’s gonna be a Gnome run.

Sherlock Gnomes will be released in January 2018
