Ricky Gervais, creator of The Office and Extras, is to join the star-studded cast of upcoming film Blazing Samurai, a family comedy inspired by Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles.
Gervais will appear alongside Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Cera, and George Takei in the animation, to be released in America on 4th August 2017.
The story follows Hank, a dog voiced by Cena, who dreams of becoming a great warrior so he can save the town of Kakamucho from an evil cat warlord. Gervais will voice Ika Chu, a sneaky cat who plans to rid Kakamucho of its feline inhabitants.
The film will be directed by Chris Bailey, animation director of Alvin and the Chipmunks, and Mark Koetsier (Kung Fu Panda, How to Train Your Dragon).
Gervais will not be the only British star to lend their voice to the comedy, with former Spice Girl Mel B making an appearance and Mel Brooks voicing Shogun, a benevolent but misguided leader, as well as executive producing.
Gervais is currently preparing to host the Golden Globes for the fourth time in January, before the releases of his Netflix film Special Correspondents and Life on the Road, which follows the music career of The Office’s David Brent.
