ANDREW COLLINS: FILM OF THE DAY
Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief ★★★
There are five books in Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson series, about a schoolboy who discovers he is the demigod son of Poseidon, but only two have been adapted into films (a third is rumoured for next year). Harry Potter alumnus Chris Columbus directs the mid-budget original, in which a distracted Percy (likeable Logan Lerman) discovers that he must return Zeus’s lightning bolt to Mount Olympus. Boasting Minotaurs, Medusa (with slightly disappointing CGI for Uma Thurman’s snake hair) and a showdown above Manhattan, it all makes for a decent adventure.
The Broken Circle Breakdown ★★★
If you’re looking for something completely different, then how about the melodramatic tale of a Belgian bluegrass singer who falls for a tattoo artist?
Marley & Me ★★★
Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston are upstaged by another shaggy blonde – a cute labrador – in this warm and not entirely fluffy family portrait.
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson tries a bit of socially conscious drama between knocking heads together after his son is jailed under dodgy legislation.
The Front Line ★★★
A Congolese refugee in Dublin finds himself dragged into helping a gang of thugs as they set out to rob a bank. Edge-of-your-seat stuff.
