Actress Sue Nichollas has admitted to being taken aback by a Coronation Street plotline that sees her character Audrey Roberts develop romantic feelings for Ken Barlow.
When asked whether Ken and Audrey would make for a good couple, the Corrie star said: “There are some very big shoes to fill and they are very different people. I was quite surprised when I was first told about what was going to happen, but nicely surprised.
“In fairness, it depends what they are going to do and how it develops. It’s nice that it’s quite a slow burner and is coming from a mutual friendship. And, as yet, we don’t know if they will end up as a couple.”
Audrey looks set to become embroiled in a tug of love for the affections of Ken, who will also receive attention from Nessa, the sister of Cathy Matthews.
But whatever the result of this romantic entanglement, it seems that Nicholls is relishing the opportunity to work with long-standing cast member William Roache.
In an interview on the Coronation Street website, Nicholls commented: “I love Bill and we haven’t ever really worked together before this to any degree – I have been in the Barlows’ maybe about half a dozen times in total before this storyline.
“It’s a joy for me, as an actor, to work with different people. You get used to working with your on-screen family and it is lovely to suddenly have something different.
“Bill is a real giggler and it seems I make him laugh even when I’m trying to be dramatic.”
