Hold on to your hats and pick the glass from your feet, because John McClane could be getting an origins story…
Die Hard Year One is the proposed title we’re hearing from Hollywood insiders Deadline, with the suggestion that it will follow a young McClane (presumably played by someone other than Bruce Willis) in “gritty” New York City circa 1979, while Willis himself could appear as McClane Snr in “bookending” scenes (complete with pipe and slippers, we hope, telling the story to his grandson).
It’s hard to say exactly what form the story will take – the first Die Hard film (released and set in 1988) suggested McClane didn’t have much experience of high-stakes action, but we can’t imagine watching the character do his police paperwork would be quite exciting enough for a whole movie.
Maybe there’ll need to be a little creative fudging by Live Free Or Die Hard’s Len Wiseman, who is said to be returning to direct the new movie, or maybe Bruce Willis can now time travel like he did in Looper. Either way, we’ll have to wait a few years to find out…
