Coronation Street’s Dean Fagan has praised an upcoming storyline that will see his screen sister become the unwitting  focus of a ‘revenge porn’ vendetta.

“I think it’s brilliant. It’s so current. I’ve had experiences where I’ve seen girls go through it at college and it’s really affected them mentally, yet it is something that has been swept under the carpet for a long time,” says the actor. “The law has changed now and people can be prosecuted for distributing these sort of images without consent, so the storyline is very fresh.”

Next week’s episodes of the ITV soap see Steph Britton’s former boyfriend Jamie manipulate her brother Luke by threatening to put salacious photos of her online.

Scenes to be shown on Monday 19 October see Jamie call in at the garage and tell Luke that he’s put him down to race on the following Saturday.

Luke refuses, explaining explaining he’s promised Maria he won’t race again. But Jamie tells Luke he needs cash from the race to clear his mounting debts.

Luke’s aghast when Jamie shows him some old photos of a scantily clad Steph on his phone and threatens to make them public unless Luke cooperates.

Says Fagan: “The best thing for Luke to do would probably be to tell Steph that Jamie has these photos and that Jamie he’s threatening to do publish them, but where would the drama be in that?

“Luke decides to keep it all from her. He wants to protect her so much. He sees her in a happy place with Andy, she enjoys her job at the Bistro, everything’s going right for her. Luke just wants to keep this whole nasty affair away from Steph.

“It probably isn’t the best thing to do but he feels it’s the best way to keep her safe.”

And with Luke having told Maria that his racing career is over, just what impact will the blackmail plot have on his love life? Will Luke be prepared to sacrifice his relationship to protect his sister?

“It’s a question of whether blood is thicker than water. It’s a fine balance. He doesn’t want to lose anyone and he’s just seeing what path he could go down to protect Steph and not let anything happen to her while still not losing Maria.

“He’s very stressed out and you’re going to see a lot of angry faces!”
