The 28-year-old actress, who found fame in the hit ITV period drama, is set to appear in next weekend’s episode.

Gwen was Anna’s best friend and fellow housemaid back in Downton Abbey’s first season. She was keen to leave service and, with the help of Lady Sybil, found a position as a secretary, leaving the Abbey just before war was declared on Germany. We haven’t seen her since, though Mrs Hughes received a letter about her marriage in season four.

Leslie’s character was always determined to better her life and it seems she has. We only got a a glimpse of her at the end of tonight’s episode but she’s using the main door, not the servant’s entrance. And she looks like she’d be more at home enjoying a Crawley dinner party than upstairs lighting fires in their bedrooms.

“She hasn’t got time to greet her old friends, then,” remarks Thomas grumpily.

So why is she back at the Abbey? Perhaps she really is there for a dinner party? Maybe she was invited to The Carsons’ wedding but put the wrong date in her diary…? We’ll have to tune in next week to find out.

Since leaving Downton Abbey behind, Rose Leslie has gone on to star as Ygritte in Game of Thrones. She’s also had roles in The Great Fire, Utopia and Blandings, and is set to appear in BBC1’s Luther later this year.
