Has Tom Branson returned to Downton Abbey for good?

The former chauffeur left America and returned to the Crawleys in episode three

Tom Branson returned to Downton Abbey during tonight’s episode. And he’s 100% back for good.

After upping sticks and leaving for the US of A at Christmas, we thought we might have seen the last of him. The beginning of series six has been noticeably Branson-free, but that’s all about to change.

Branson and daughter Sybbie surprised the Crawleys by turning up unannounced at Mr Carson and Mrs Hughes’ wedding reception during tonight’s episode.

“Are you back for a holiday?” enquired Hughes, while Mary added: “Oh, say you’ll stay.”

“Well that’s just the point,” he replied. “I can stay as long as you want me… I’ve come back and I’d like to stay for good, if Lord Grantham will have me.”

The former chauffeur has been unsettled since Sybil’s death, trying to find his place in the world, and it seems a trip across the Atlantic has helped him find it. Just not where he expected.

“I had to go all the way to Boston to figure something out,” he continued. “I learned that Downton is my home and that you are my family. If I didn’t quite know that before I left, I know it now.”

Downton Abbey continues on Sundays at 9:00pm on ITV
