Doctor Who’s Steven Moffat on the sonic screwdriver’s future: “I’m sure it will show up again some day”

As debate about the Sonic Sunglasses rages, the show's lead writer and executive producer drops a cryptic message about the screwdriver's fate...

Doctor Who’s Peter Capaldi has been sans Sonic Screwdriver since he threw Davros a bone in the two-part series 9 opener but will the iconic Who accessory be making a comeback?

That’s the question we’ve been asking and now we have an answer from Mr Doctor Who himself, Steven Moffat.

Well… sort of.

Speaking in a video for Doctor Who’s official YouTube channel, Moffat hinted that we might not have seen the last of Twelve’s trusty tool. “I’m sure the screwdriver will show up again some day” he teased.

And he says he knew all-too-well just how much the shift from screwdriver to sunglasses might upset fans of the series.

“Sometimes you have to be heretical. Sometimes you actually have to embrace the heresy” he said. “And I just thought, really, on a whim, why would The Doctor feel wedded to a screwdriver?”

“Also it maybe resurrected the original joke which we’ve sort of slightly forgotten” he continued, “that the screwdriver was just a screwdriver that made a noise.”
