THE MARTIAN ★★★
A manned mission to Mars goes a bit pear-shaped – or rather, potato-shaped. Matt Damon plays the lonely botanist who decides the only way to survive on the Red Planet is to carb up, in Ridley Scott’s sci-fi epic. If you have any geeky tendencies, this might be your movie heaven – just don’t expect too much psychological probing.
Michael Fassbender sinks his teeth into a blood-and-guts version of Shakespeare’s Scottish play, with Marion Cotillard as his Lady Macbeth. The action is taken from the stage to the Isle of the Skye where, reportedly, Cotillard lost her way in the mist and had to be rescued from a bog. Thankfully, this isn’t a metaphor for your viewing experience.
THE INTERN ★★★
When it comes to unlikely screen partnerships, Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway should top the list and yet… They work together quite well as a dot.com entrepreneur (that’s her) and the unpaid assistant (him) who comes on board to escape the tedium of retirement. Yes, the plot does lose its way at times, but doddery it is not.
