The Shawshank Redemption, Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Prometheus: films on TV today

A banker in prison, a street racer in Tokyo and a team of scientists on a planet crawling with killer aliens: the RadioTimes team’s pick of free-to-air films on TV today

The Shawshank Redemption ★★★★★
9.00-11.55pm ITV2

Many people think this is the best film ever. No, it’s not. Tim Robbins is a banker falsely convicted of the murder of his wife and her lover and sent to Shawshank prison. There he is beaten and sexually abused until he starts laundering money for the guards and the warden. His closest friend is lifer Morgan Freeman and his prized possession a huge poster of Rita Hayworth in his cell. Very significant this as it turns out. Director Frank Darabont’s debut feature, based on Stephen King’s novel, provides both a vivid picture of the horror of incarceration and a testament to the human spirit. The performances are excellent and it is indeed a very good film but not quite a great one.

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift ★★★
10.40pm-12.35am ITV

Bad-boy teenager Lucas Black is sent to his estranged dad in Japan to avoid jail – but he still manages to get into trouble. Boy racers will love this.

Invictus ★★★★
8.00-10.45pm ITV4

Stirring drama about how Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) used the 1995 Rugby World Cup in South Africa to unite a divided nation.

Prometheus ★★★★
9.00-11.25pm Film4

33 years after Alien, Ridley Scott proves he’s still the master of sci-fi horror. His sci-fi survival film, The Martian, hits screens later this month.

Basic Instinct ★★★
10.10pm-12.40am More4

This erotic thriller, famous for the interrogation-room leg-crossing scene, rendered Sharon Stone – as the ultraseductive predatory novelist – a 90s sex symbol.
