Ricky Gervais won the Emmys… without actually winning an Emmy

The Derek writer and comedian didn't actually win an award, but this still happened...

Ricky Gervais has been nominated for a lot of Emmys – 22, to be precise – but he’s only walked away with silverware on two occasions.

This year the Derek creator was up for outstanding lead actor in a limited series or movie and, as he suspected, duly lost to Richard Jenkins in Olive Kitteridge.

Although Gervais wasn’t one to let a little envelope stop him getting his hands on some silverware.

Before his category was announced, he took to the stage to present best supporting actor in a comedy series, and – anticipating his impending loss – asked for an award to be brought to the podium.

Then this happened.

The picture is there, the video is there, in a few days time no one will remember Ricky Gervais losing an Emmy. Instead, they’ll see this and presume he won. Genius.

On his instruction, plenty of media outlets began tweeting the snap.

Even Gervais’ Wikipedia entry is claiming he won.

We might as well start calling him Ricky Gervais, THREE-time Emmy Award winner. After all, the pictures are there to prove it.
