JK Rowling settles a very important cat question

Crookshanks or Mrs Norris? Who would win in a showdown?

Harry Potter vs Lord Voldemort. Molly Weasley vs Bellatrix Lestrange. Neville Longbottom vs puberty. JK Rowling treated us to many epic head-to-heads in her Harry Potter books.

But while Malfoy engaged in his many showdowns with Harry, Ron and Hermione, and Snape waged war on all of Gryffindor, there was one fierce duel we never got the chance to witness:

Crookshanks vs Mrs Norris.

In one corner, we have Hermione’s mischevious pet. Half-Kneazle, Crookshanks has some serious feline skills, able to solve problems on his own and single out those who are untrustworthy (*cough* Peter Pettigrew). In the words of Sirius Black, “He’s the most intelligent of his kind I’ve ever met.”

In the other corner, we have Mrs Norris. Argus Filch’s cat has an annoying knack of alerting her master to any misbehaving students trespassing on school grounds. But when it comes to bulk, she’s on the skinny side – described by Rowling as “a scrawny, dust-coloured creature with bulging, lamp-like eyes just like Filch’s.”

The two cats never draw claws in the books, but one fan quizzed Rowling on Twitter about a possible outcome were they ever to go head-to-head…

The answer?

Thank goodness for that! Although we have a feeling Professor McGonagall’s Animagus would defeat both before you could say Transfiguro.
